* on Sunday the visit of Saint Francis’ Basilica is not allowed.

This is a chance to spend a delightful day out of Rome to visit Umbria, one of the most picturesque regions of Italy, rich in vineyards, olive trees and the famous hilltop villages across the valley.

The route is dotted with charming medieval towns such as Spoleto, Trevi, Foligno and the most famous of all, Assisi.  The magical town of Saint Francis is still surrounded by ancient walls, spread on the green slopes of Mount Subasio with its colourful houses of pink stone, narrow streets, flower-decked balconies, noble palaces, all providing beautiful views for memorable pictures. Saint Francis is the founding father of the Order of Friars Minor more commonly known as the Franciscan Order, and venerated as Saint of the Catholic Church. His tomb is the pilgrimage destination for thousands of believer from all over the world.

The tour starts with an interesting visit to Saint Francis' Basilica with its early Renaissance masterpiece by Giotto and Cimabue... St. Chiara Basilica ( Saint Clare ), Clare is the founder of the order of the Poor Clares . She is buried in the crypt of this church where the Crucifix that spoke to St. Francis is also preserved. Piazza del Comune: here are the civic buildings dating to the medieval Commune, the People’s Tower and an interesting Roman sacred construction named Minerva temple. Below the square there are finds of a large Roman public area.

After the visit, we'll not miss the chance to taste a good Umbrian lunch with a traditional 4 courses menu in the small city centre.  In the afternoon we will proceed to Cascia a small town in the south-eastern tip of Umbria, surrounded by beautiful mountains, where Saint Rita lived in the 15th century, first as a married woman and then as an Augustinian nun. The highlights of Cascia include the Basilica of Saint Rita and the Monastery of the Augustinian nuns, besides all the places linked to her life. At short distance from Cascia is Roccaporena, the birthplace of the Saint, where we can still see her house, her wedding church, the tiny garden, and the “rock” where she used to recollect in prayer.  Return to the Eternal city in the late afternoon.  On request we can arrange Dinner on the way back to Rome !
