Underground Italy

Available:  all year long     10 days / 9 nights  with 5 meals included and 1 aperitif underground

There’s a long road which ignores chaos and bustle; it’s our underground Country.

Thousands kilometers, under our feet, with the most vary shapes and usages; aqueducts, mines, catacombs and refuges. Sometimes they are natural shelters, others are ingenious human works. A subterranean world which has been lively and active till the II World War. Then, the aggressive rebuilding works in the postwar period cancelled all traces. This face of Italy has been revealed few decades ago and nowadays enjoys great appeal for all tourists who decides to not see the sky for a while.

Beneath the bustling city life lies another mysterious and unknown world where time seems to stand still.  Bowels of Turin narrate stories of patriots dead while opposing the French attacks. Dedicated to the patriots, especially to the soldier-hero Pietro Micca, is the Cittadella; a real museum composed by a net of 14kms galleries on different levels once used as storage of gunpowder. Our guide will tell you about the alchemic experiments under Palazzo Madama and the tunnels connecting the aristocratic Palaces. Some of them are spacious enough to be run in carriage.  Independent lunch and afternoon at your leisure for visits and shopping. Independent dinner and overnight.

Then you will descend to visit the most suggestive works underground.  Visit to the Labyrinth of Orvieto, created over the centuries with more than thousand caves starting from the Etruscan cisterns, then the Colombari  of the middle-age and ending with the late Renaissance engineering masterwork of St Patrick's Well (Pozzo di San Patrizio)  famous among the Italians and less knew abroad; it’s a formidable hydraulic work, 50 meters deep with a double march sense, committed by Pope Clemente VII, to assure water to the city in case of siege. From its dimensions and to the accurate project, we understand the Pope’s ambition to go down in history with this great work.  Time at your leisure in Orvieto city center, to stroll around discovering artisans shops, café and restaurants.
